Impact

Graduates of the College of Nursing and Allied Health Professions compose the majority of the workforce in Acadiana in the areas of nursing, health information management, and health services administration.

Due to the success of these programs and the positive student outcomes, graduates are heavily recruited by health care agencies throughout the United States, presenting opportunities to provide high quality patient care services.

One example of the impact that was made by nursing in the Acadiana community is Project HOPE (Homeless Outreach Providing Essentials).

In Spring 2018, students enrolled in NURS 340, Community and Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing, under the guidance of Dr. Jessica McCarthy, Community Health Nursing Faculty, provided health promotion services to the homeless and underserved population of Lafayette.

Students, faculty, and volunteers provided a total of 2,358 services to 237 people over the course of the day. Services included vital signs monitoring, body fat analysis, hearing, vision, diabetes, and stroke screening, and education related to hypertension, diet, stroke and exercise.

This event, hosted by St. Bernadette Clinic, included vendors from a wide array of clinical and community agencies, such as Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center, Minute Med Urgent Care Clinic, Grace Home Health, Volunteers of America, National Alliance for Mental Health (NAMI), Heart Hospital, and many others. Participants were provided with personal care kits, shoes, socks, food, shirts, and backpacks.

Due to the overwhelmingly positive response by the homeless and underserved, this event is planned to be conducted annually by nursing students and faculty.
